George VI
1951 marks the Jubilee of Federation and to commemorate this, the third commemorative florin was struck, dubbed the Jubilee Florin, features a sword crossing a mace on the reverse, with a crown above and the Southern Cross within. On either side of the design are the dates, 1901 and 1951 and 'AUSTRALIA' and 'FLORIN' at the top and bottom parts of the legend.
This unique reverse design is probably what prompted it being hoarded, as like more commemoratives, though some argue that the design's ties to the monarchy have part to do with this (Sterling & Currency, 2008). The coin is almost always well struck up however the handling and distribution process that year was particularly rough for the Jubilee florin and as such most have numerous surface hairlines which preclude a grade higher than MS63. Sourcing this coin in MS64 can be a real challenge and in MS65 near impossible.
