1944 Florin

In 1944 the Melbourne
mint struck 22.44 million Australian florins bearing the Kruger Gray design of the Coat of Arms on the
reverse and Paget's portrait of King George VI on the
obverse. The San Francisco
mint also assisted in the production of Australian florins (1944-S Florin), these can be differentiated from the Melbourne
mint issue by the presence of an S
mintmark above the date.

The Melbourne mint issue, despite the higher
mintage is a much more difficult coin to acquire in
mint state due to the near absence of
bank rolls surfacing. Sourcing the date at MS65 and above can represent a significant challenge and for most collectors will necessitate being satisfied with an MS64 example.
