1918-I Half Penny

Much like the 1916 (Learn more about the 1916-I Half Penny) and 1917 half pennies (Learn more about the 1917-I Half Penny), the 1918 half penny was struck at the Calcutta mint in India identified by the I mintmark below the lower scroll on the reverse, similar to the 1916 half penny.

The 1918 half penny is one of the key dates of the half penny series, especially if sought in mint state grades. This is mostly due to the already low initial mintage of 1.44 million pieces but unlike the similar mintages from the 1914 issues, the 1918 had no notable hoards turn up making it rare in mint state.

As of this stage, PCGS has only certified two examples as mint state, one in MS62 and one in MS64 (PCGS Population Report, 2010) making it a highly desirable coin in any mint state designation and one of the few pre-decimal coins that commands strong demand in AU grades.

As with the 1916 (Learn more about the 1916-I Half Penny) and 1917 (Learn more about the 1917-I Half Penny) Calcutta mint half pennies, the 1918 is usually well struck up though these means very little as a vast majority of 1918-I half pennies are worn beyond the state where strike strength matters.
