1924 Penny

In 1924 both the Melbourne and Sydney mints produced pennies to help with demand brought about by the roaring twenties. The Melbourne mint produced 2,649,840 pennies while the Sydney mint produced 2,016,000 bringing the total official mintage to 4,665,840 (Triton Technologies International Ltd, 2000). In 1925 however, the Sydney mint produced an additional 832,200 pennies but no 1925 dies had arrived at the Sydney mint. It is reasonable to assume that they produced these pennies from 1924 dies bringing the total mintage to 5,498,040.

Most 1924 pennies were produced from a London obverse die but approximately 3% feature the Indian obverse die (Triton Technologies International Ltd, 2000). These are quite scarce and sought after today.

The Indian die can be differentiated from the London die by counting the number of denticles. The London die has 177 while the Indian die has 178.

An easy way to differentiate between them is to check the alignment of the N in OMN. On the Indian die the N lines up with a denticle, while on the London die, the N lines up with a gap between denticles.
