1926 Sixpence

The George V sixpence series, lasting throughout George V's reign from 1911 to 1936, features the Coat of Arms with 'Advance Australia' across the scroll, 'SIXPENCE' up the top and the year of issue down the bottom. The

Like most George V series, this a very popular series to collect. In lower grade, all dates can be acquired at reasonable expense. Type set collectors would do well aiming for the 1918-M, 1921, 1926, 1927, 1934, 1935 and 1936 for good strikes though the 1918-M and 1935 do come at high cost.

This series was struck at the London, Sydney and Melbourne mints. From 1911 to 1914 the London mint struck the sixpence. From 1916 to 1920 the Melbourne mint struck sixpence bearing the

Mintmark

A marking, usually a letter or dot that signifies which mint struck a particular coin

 

mintmark 'M' under the date and from 1921 to 1926 the Melbourne mint in conjunction with the Sydney mint struck sixpence and the rest of the series was struck solely by the Melbourne mint.
