1889-S 13 pearls Half Sovereign

The key date of the series, the 1889 Sydney comes from a tiny mintage of 32,000 (Marsh, M, A, 2004) though has traditionally always been underrated in the series, possibly because of catalogues not publishing a mintage figure for this date, despite Royal mint records having a figure for the year. The coin's rarity was only revealed at the Reserve Bank of Australia sale having so few quality examples available (Downies, 2005).

There would be an estimated 500 examples surviving with 3 or 4 mint state examples surviving. Out of the 500, approximately 50-60 examples feature only 12 pearls on Queen Victoria's necklace (Learn more about the 1889-S 12 pearls Half Sovereign).
