1897-S Half Sovereign

The 1897 Sydney is one of the easier dates in the series to acquire in average or better though rarely turns up in bullion grade. Mint reports indicate that no coins were struck at the Sydney mint in 1897 though 50,000 coins were struck in 1898 and 65,000 coins were struck in 1899. It is probably that these were struck using 1897 dies indicating a total mintage of 115,000. The type is available in Extra Fine to Uncirculated though is very difficult to acquire. One example in Gem Uncirculated is known and was offered though Noble Numismatics recently where it realized close to $15,000.
