1887-S Half Sovereign

The 1887 Sydney are both of similar rarity to the 1886 Sydney (Learn more about the 1886-S Half Sovereign) in lower grades, however at AU grades or higher, the 1886 Sydney (Learn more about the 1886-S Half Sovereign) tends to turn up far less frequently with 1887 Sydney mint halves being available right up to Choice Uncirculated at the Reserve Bank of Australia Sale (Downies, 2005). Both dates are known by approximately 1,250 to 1,500 examples making them both relatively common when compared with most earlier half sovereigns though still quite difficult to acquire with only a handful of appearances of each date per year. Note that the mintage figure used for the 1887 Sydney is combined with the Jubilee Head types of the same year and mint.
