1926 Half Penny

In the final year of the Sydney mint, just over 4 million half pennies were produced: 1,992,000 from the Sydney mint and 2,140,800 from the Melbourne mint (Coin Web, 2007). While no identifying features were specifically added to the coin's design to differentiate coins struck from each respective mint, the Sydney mint issues feature a more direct, cleaner, brilliant finish alongside a stronger central strike and weaker legend, while the Melbourne mint issues although also struck with a brilliant finish, tended to be less even in reflectivity and often suffer from a central strike weakness.

Notice how the Sydney mint issue illustrated on the left above has some weakness around the periphery consistent with many 1922 Sydney mint issues while the Melbourne mint has a central strike weakness consistent with surrounding years struck in Melbourne.

The date is readily available in circulated grades and in mint state can be acquired for a fairly affordable price though obtaining the coin with original mint brilliance does still represent a challenge. Date set collectors should aim for this date in at least MS64BN perhaps dropping to MS63 if an Red-Brown coin is offered.

The Sydney and Melbourne mints also produced specimens (Learn more about the 1926 Specimen Half Penny) and proofs (Learn more about the 1926 Proof Half Penny) respectively in 1926.
