1936 Half Penny

The 1936 half penny is one of the easiest George V half penny to acquire in mint state although finding the coin in the upper mint state grades can be quite a challenge with the date being quite scarce at MS65 and higher, especially with an RED designation. Upon the introduction of the George VI series half pennies in 1938, many George V half pennies were hoarded for being different. The low denomination and economic recovery made it easier for individuals to hoard the coin which has resulted in the coin being relatively common in AU grades and higher including the low mint state grades.

Like the other years in the final run of George V half pennies, the 1936 is almost always well struck up but as most mint state graded pieces have seen some circulation, they are normally covered in surface hairlines which may limit the gradings to the low MS range. Finding the coin in MS64 or higher is the key to finding a truly uncirculated example but this can be quite difficult, with such pieces usually commanding strong prices, especially if found with full mint brilliance.
