The 1923 Florin was produced at the Melbourne Mint with a total
mintage
of 1,038,464. This was the lowest
mintage
for a number of years however the coins overall scarcity and sales prices does not seem to reflect this. Population reports
by PCGS show similar populations of the 1923 Florin and the years that immediately surround it.
(PCGS, 2017)
The majority of examples in mint-state are MS62 and surprisingly the highest graded example is an impressive MS67.
The low
mintage
in 1923 was related to a reduced overall demand for coins. One report in the Sydney newspaper 'The Sun' showed that between
'1921 and 1922' the total coinage orders were 356,675 compared to an average of 448,985 for the seven years prior.
(The Sun, 1923)
It is hard to determine if this slump was due to the rapidly altering economic climate of the 1920s or the
mints successfully resolving the earlier coin shortage.
