The 1944 Shilling was struck at the Melbourne Mint to a total
mintage
of 14,576,000. In the same year the San FranciscoMint also produced
a further 8,000,000 pieces. The types can be differentiated by a small 'S' mint-mark located below
the ram on the reverse of the San Francisco
Mint variety. Despite having a higher
mintage
the Melbourne variety is notably scarcer than the San Francisco variant. The remains reasonably affordable into lower
mint-states however by MS64 the type becomes quite valuable.
